More like Tin Man...
Yes, the heartless or rather heartful character from the fabulous Wizard of Oz, circa 1939. Let us not forget the song titled, "Tin Man", performed by the band, America. The song is on my iPod. Tin Man topped the Billboard Pop chart at #4, in 1974. Then there was the movie, "Tin Men", which starred; Richard Dreyfuss and Danny Devito as aluminum siding sales men.
However, I digress...

X65, M
RUN: 107 minutes, 10 miles, trail/road.
SWIM: 10 minutes, 400 yards.
BIKE: 120 minutes, 30 miles, road bike.
Long run today, felt pretty good throughout. Did a cool down swim, the pool "guy" threw me out of the pool as he had to hit the water with some major cleaning solution. He was late to work, so I had to give up my chance to swim so he could do his job, nice job pool "guy". Group ride today met at 0730, didn't make the group but did the ride anyway, Alpine Inn to 92/ Canada and back. 5 in the group, said hi after the ride and we all went our own way. So much for the group ride! Oh well, 237 minutes of workout in for the day. Will rest and relax the remainder of the day. Positivity works, make it work for you. Think, Act, Live, Be Positive!

BIKE: 45 minutes, 14.65 miles, stationary, good pace.
Tried the energy drink, FRS today. Claims to aid the body with energy. Had a good workout
seemed to have a bit of extra oxygen capacity. Will test it again on Sunday when I do the long run and group bike ride. Lance endorses it, so it must be good? I got a half off coupon and picked some up at Safeway the other day. It ain't cheap @ 2.29 per can. I have been hit with mail and internet offers from FRS and Lance for several months, they finally beat me down. Big road test on Sunday...

A Great Gift

THE GIFT
My daughter, Kristi called me on Fathers Day, letting me know she was thinking about me. It is so great to get that call, I can't do justice to how good it made me feel in mere words. We got together on Monday for lunch and she surprised me with a gift, the book above. Once again how wonderful that my daughter was so thoughtful. The book is outstanding. It is a collection of Jack, Bobby and Ted Kennedy's spoken and written words. Most inspiring and intelligent.
Much like my daughter. Thank you Kristi, you know how to make a Dad proud!

Achieving Success Part 2

(Refer to the Post on May 27 for Achieving Success Part 1)

ACHIEVING SUCCESS PART 2
Once you have defined what Success means to you and for yourself, you have the opportunity to accept this reality and make it your VISION. It is helpful to vision yourself as attaining the success, the more often the better. Our mind will seek to achieve what it is subjected to in the way of thoughts and your imagination is powerful.

Success defined and accepted becomes your vision. Achieving success, or your vision is a process. Unless you stumble upon the winning lotto ticket and you define your success in that winning lotto ticket, you will yet have some real work to do.

You must PRIORITIZE & ORGANIZE your way towards achieving your vision.

Consider some of the various aspects of your life: Family, Friends, Career, Personal Growth, Recreation, Travel, Education, and the list goes on...

Consider creating categories on a yellow pad for each of the various aspects. You will likely need to consider sub categories as well.

As an Example: Supposing you have a category labeled: PERSONAL HEALTH
you will need to sub categorize:
Exercise
Diet
Rest

... within each of these subcategories you may want to further label: EXERCISE
Aerobic
Anaerobic
Stretching

You get the idea?

You need to plan out or organize yourself and then prioritize the categories & subcategories...

Three reasons for creating categories from the aspects of your life are:

1. There are several varying areas to consider allocating time and effort toward.
2. There are inter dependent relationships amongst the categories and subcategories.
3. There are simply only so many hours in each day! 24, I believe!

Breaking it down this way and putting some pencils and yellow pad to use here is designed to help you decide what is most important and what you must act upon immediately, how your choices will effect other efforts and how important it is to PRIORITIZE & ORGANIZE.

You may well discover the need to put off one endeavor despite it's attraction, simply because you must achieve in another area of your life, before you can possibly consider the area you initially desired to act upon. Likewise there will be areas than can be advanced upon simultaneously.
This used to be called," Killing Two Birds With One Stone."
This old school stuff, still works!
Though some will say, its not politically correct. My reply to that is.......bleeped.

So with your definition of success, comes your vision, then organize and prioritize yourself.
In Part 3, we will discuss ...THE BLUEPRINT. This will come in a later post, so stay tuned.

Today's Workout 6/24/09

X65, W

BIKE: 20 minutes, 5.80 miles, stationary, easy spin.

RUN: 60 minutes, 6.23 miles, treadmill, tempo.

Another one of those mornings, don't really feel like working out, somehow I end up in the fitness center with the idea of doing a 20/20, BIKE/RUN. The bike goes well enough and I start up the treadmill thinking maybe, maybe I can go the 60 minutes, sure enough I get it done.
PERSONAL RECORDS; Don't think I have ever put in a full 60 minutes running on the treadmill before today. Combine yesterday's two treadmill runs totalling 4.45 miles with today's 6.23 and that makes 10.68 miles on treadmill over two days, no doubt a record as well. Am I becoming a treadmill runner? I think not, though as mentioned in an earlier post a few weeks ago, I used to despise the treadmill, now I find it useful and am setting new personal bests on it!
I will probably hit the trail or road tomorrow to get a bit of variety.
Run for the health of it.

Countdown to Le Tour

Le Tour De France, Stage 1: 15 K, Individual Time Trial
July 4th...10 days to go!
All things being equal, despite my strong attachment as a fan for Lance Armstrong, I must go with Alberto Contador as the favorite to win the 2009 Tour De France. I will be watching when I can and I will be rooting for Lance all the way. Astana has put together a strong team, a lot can happen during the Tour, it will be exciting and interesting and all the more so when they begin the mountain stages on July the 10th. It is gonna be a great Tour! Can't hardly wait!

The Coffee Made Me Do It...
BIKE: 40 minutes, 13+ miles, Hard ride, stationary.

WALK: 10 minutes
RUN: 10 minutes, 1 mile, easy jog, treadmill.
BIKE: 10 minutes, 3 miles, easy spin, stationary.
One of those mornings where the mind is strongly suggesting you take the day off. By the end of the first mug of coffee, the only question is when and how long, at mug 1.5, I am out the door committed to doing something, but not even I know what. You get going and just keep on going and a day off turns into a successful hard bike, hard run, and then some...

Today's Workout 6/22/09

NB 749's
Several months ago I took a chance and bought a pair of New Balance 749's. I had been wearing NB 587's for probably 7 years for the strong stability factor, comfort and USA made branding, not to mention the old school blue, grey and leather look, plus they were extremely long lasting.
I decided to try the 749's seeking a more cushioned type shoe, and this is it! I love my 587's and still wear them around, but have been running in the 749's on road, trail and treadmill and I am very happy with them...Another pitch for the NEW BALANCE BRAND, oh yeah they are manufactured in the USA too!

Father's Day

My Dad is quite a man. I love him and respect him for who he is and what he has accomplished in his 77 years, and for all he has been through. I am fortunate for my Dad is one of my best friends. My father has always supported me in every facet of my life. We don't have the father-son rivalry or inability to communicate that plagues many relationships. I always look forward to
spending time with my Dad and we get along great. I wish my father all the peace and joy one could have...I hope and pray for his continued health and prosperity. I know he won't be with
me forever in the physical sense, but I hope it's many years before I only have him with me in the strong spirit that he is. I am part my Dad, and its a pretty good part of me, too. Thank you, Dad for all you have done for me and the support you have always given me.

I love you, Dad.

Today's Workout 6/21/09

This brand is my shoe. They still make some of their models in the USA. I don't do Nike.
Great products, but I don't like their way of business. New Balance is where it's at. I used to be and Adidas kid, way back when they owned the soccer shoe market. Thats my plug for NB.

RUN
113 minutes, 10 miles, all trail, with Kim. Wow she hung in strong and logged in a big 10 miler, talk about persaverance!

BIKE
82 minutes, 22 miles, road bike ride, 16.1 average. Cut the ride off short at 22 miles. I am cooked, fried, done, finished....sometimes we just get tired and so it goes.

Today's Workout 6/18/09

Sometimes our performance is all about getting the right amount of rest and sleep. While up at the Cabin last week, I built up a pretty significant sleep deficit. To begin with I generally get 6 hours of sleep if I am very fortunate. The daily schedule at the Cabin created a real sleep loss. You see, I made my decision to get my workouts in, no matter what. I get up early as it is, at 0300 or 0400. When you go fishing it's an early, early start! So... super early mornings followed by evenings coming in late from fishing and then getting dinner on... well I just built up a heck of a deficit. In addition my caffeine intake in the PM hours may have adversely effected my ability to get good sleep in too.

I have eliminated the PM caffeine and have been back on a more routine schedule for few days now. My sleep quality, overall hours of sleep and strength have improved. I really noticed how good I felt today. An easy 6 mile jog, a short swim and a strong bike ride on the road bike averaging 16.9 mph, over 22 miles, with really good legs. I attribute the performance to proper sleep. I hope I can continue along this path to feeling better, improved performance and with the quality of plentiful sleep.

M, X60

RUN
66 minutes, 6 miles, trail run, easy.600 yards.

SWIM
15 minutes, 600 yards.

BIKE
80 minutes, 22.5 miles, 16.9 mph. Road bike, good legs, strong ride.

Later today, after work I will be heading up to Lake Tahoe on business for just a night over. I may have more time driving up and back than actual time in working meetings. It's okay it is part of what I do and I am indeed happy to do it. Meeting in Tahoe? No, I cannot complain about that. I have it in my mind to get a nice run in up there on Friday morning on the trail I discovered while up there a couple of weeks ago. Yes, it's all good. Will post again, sometime on Friday, in the meantime...don't settle for being good, be great! Enjoy it all.

Pulling Yourself Up

There are times when we simply feel tired, blue, upset or simply depressed. Circumstances and events can cause us to feel like this. Prolonged periods of feeling depressed are unhealthy and should not be ignored. Consulting with a medical professional may be necessary. Talk therapy and prescription drugs are sometimes helpful. The point here though is that YOU need to take that step towards curing yourself. Accepting a life living in a depressed state will only keep you in that depressed state. ACTION is the antidote to APATHY.

One must decide to take action, to do something differently. Hows your diet? Are you getting the right vitamins and supplements? How much exercise are you getting? How is your attitude?
Are you getting plenty of sleep and rest? What thoughts are you running through your head?
Are you taking time for yourself? Analyze the balance or lack of balance in your life. Sometimes you just have to endure, other times you have to plow through the phase you are in and power through the slump by taking immediate and definitive ACTION.

They way we feel comes from the thoughts that we dwell upon. If you get angry or sad, it comes from the thoughts in your mind. The same is true when you are happy or content. It is the thoughts that determine our feelings. If you desire to change the way you feel, examine the thoughts you are running through your mind. Change your thoughts and you change the way you feel. Think about it. Pull yourself up. You can if you think you can. Think you can?
I think You can.

At The Wickiup

Yesterday after we finished up the conference at Sunriver, JB and I got out to the Wickiup, launched his boat and got rigged up for fishing at around noon. All reports from local anglers were poor, our patience and caveman efforts produced a brown at 22 inches a nice looking fish and a 16 inch kokanee. Great day, good fun. Got back to the cabin at 6pm, JB bbqued some fish, I whipped up one of my famous stir frys and we had a nice meal, shortly therafter sleep prevailed. The plan is to hit Paulina Lake this morning...gotta get a work out in first! Bye.

Cultus Lake/ Mackinaw

FEEDING THE EAGLE
Unbelievable trip! Hooked up with MD at 0530, drove out to Cultus Lake, got the boat in the water at 0630 and the Lake Master, (MD) got us into some Mackinaw. Only about 5. Threw a wounded 5 pounder to the lake, wherin an American Bald Eagle snatched it within 20 seconds. This was an amazing and unforgettable sight to see! The Lake Master apparently does feed the eagles like this on a semi regular basis! Our great thanks to our host and yet another great day under the Central Oregon skies.

Found a great new trail! Highway 50 and Kahle Drive, corner parking lot and trail head leading to Nevada Beach! Wide packed trail 8 feet in width. Winding thru meadows, Ponderosa pines and gently sloping down to the Lake, Tahoe that is. Trail is a gem, ends up in National Park grounds, nice camping area, take note. This is a great discovery and will be run again on future visits here. Trail out and back would be about 3, located about 3/4 of a mile from Harraha's on lake side of 50.

Morning is Good

Good Morning!

Thank you, to those of you who take your time to comment on the varied words and thoughts that I post here. It is interesting and meaningful to get feedback. Thank you! Followers are encouraged to apply.

I am without a doubt a morning person. I get up early and am most productive in the AM hours.
Getting the exercise in, posting here, organizing the day, basic chores. I like to feel productive and I am out of my element when I cannot feel as though I am contributing and producing. So I seek to feel productive and the only way I can feel productive is to actually be productive and that means GET IT DONE! Or at minimum, get it started. Coffee is helpful. What you did or did not do the day before is a factor, sleep and quality sleep is a major factor as well, but its mostly a mental mindset and established habits that work.

Some people are night creatures and just as they cannot conceive of what I do in the early AM hours, I don't really understand the night owl routine. So be it. Call it wiring. Call it what you will, it comes down to what you do and the habits you create. Sure you can break habits. But you don't want to be in the habit of habit breaking, no then your drifting, just like this post. My point is this: I like the morning, getting fired up to start the day and achieving something, that's just who I am. Might as well thrive on it. It seems to work. Okay so get moving....I AM, later.

Today's Workout 6/1/09

Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe
X70 & W
BIKE
42 minutes, 14 miles, stationary at fitness center, Harrah's. Recovery ride, easy.
RUN
56 minutes, 5 miles. Started at Lukins Way on the paved bike bath, to Pope Beach, on the wet sand of the beach within 3 feet of the clear waters of Lake Tahoe. Calm and flat, followed the beach for almost a mile, turned up to the parking lot road to the turnaround, into a meadow shere the tall grass left a narrow trail followed it, each step a cushioning feel atop the meadow.
Turned back through the parking lot road onto the bike path, through the Firs and Pines back to the start of the run. A good one!
RUN
40 minutes, 3+ miles, TRAIL RUN, 2 a days! Fallen Leaf Lake Trail Run, rocky, narrow, slow going but great workout, views of the lake, awesome. Numerous choices on trail with many off shooting trails....
SWIM
13 minutes, 520 yards, in Lake Tahoe! Talk about coool down! Not that cold in the shallows.
Pretty good workout day....
