SWIM: 1 15 minutes 600 yards/.31 miles
BIKE: 5 233 minutes 67 miles
RUN: 6 299 minutes 28 miles
TOTAL: 12 547 minutes 95.31 miles
SUMMARY: Not a stellar week, broke the streak of running at 218 days. Lets face it I am fatigued and unmotivated for some unknown reason, have to go with it and get through it. I managed to maintain total minutes over 500 which is spectacular considering how I am lacking in desire to get up and go out and exercise. Goal this week, just keep on at least a bit and get over the lack of mojo whenever it decides to return. Mild depression? I do not know. Stay tuned to find out how this guy gets through the next week.
A record of swim, run and cycling workouts. A word or two on what Mike may be up to, advice perhaps and an occasional comment on the world at large...

RUN: 46 minutes, 5 miles, treadmill at hard effort.
Today's Thoughts:
I have been reading a biography about Ted Williams, the great baseball player. It is a fascinating read about a complex man. From an early age, Ted decided to concentrate all of his efforts towards baseball, mainly hitting. His record in baseball attests to his success in that endeavor. The other parts of his life are even more interesting. His relations with fans, the regular Joe on the street, sportswriters, his own children, teammates, are varied and range from lifetime battles to lifetime friendships. Perhaps this is no different than the many relationships we all share both good and bad throughout our lives. His last years are lived with increasing struggles and debilitating health problems. He lived a very full and mostly very healthy life for 75 years, complex and confusing full of himself and helping those less fortunate along the way.
It is a great book about a most interesting man living life always by his own rules. Living by his own rules brings him both great fame and fortune as well as suffering. There are a number of lessons to be learned from this book, I am still reading and working to absorb it all, don't know that I will figure it all out, but if I do, I'll let you know. In the meantime, do the best you can and be great.

The man was a United States Senator for 47 years. He was a political hero for the poor and the working class. He has passed away. There is no one like him now.
We need him now more than ever. We miss him. We will remember him. The Liberal Lion of the Senate. The last brother. A fighter and a leader has gone.

Not a big workout today, light in fact. Tired AGAIN! Slow to get moving and non too motivated.
Somehow I roll out and roll on. Call it habit, persistence, guilt, or whatever you want. I managed to get something done, 68 minutes of aerobic activity, this morning. Time to go, bye.

It was back in 1961 when the Beach Boys became popular. "Surfin", made the radio and charted locally in the LA area. "Surfin Safari" was a national hit and they went on to score international fame and fortune. Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine were the original Beach Boys. Dennis and Carl have passed on. Mike Love and Al Jardine each tour with separate bands doing Beach Boys songs, while Brian Wilson the key creator of the Beach Boy sound and much of their music plays with an entirely different band today. The history of the Beach Boys is filled with stories of great success, and human tragedy, such is life. Time always moves on, change is ever present, as nothing much stays the same. We do well ourselves, to learn to become okay with change, for becoming too attached to people, places and things can bring suffering. As for the Boys and music they played, it seems to live on and it still sounds great to me!
Today's Workout:

Your out on a run, you have been running for months or years, you consider yourself a runner.
You feel tired, but know you will warm up, so you stay with it. At around the 30 minute mark you notice how easy this all feels. The legs just carry you, no real pains, your breath flows easily. Your mind drifts off for awhile and you just run. You note how good you feel and it stays with you. You pick up the pace near the end of your run, going strong. You check your watch as you cross the finish. It's a good one, an above average run. You feel great and you go about your day now having succeeded and accomplished something personal and valuable that only you really are aware of. Yeah, you do it every day, but today is one of the good runs. You have put this run away and logged it into your mind. You can't help but feel good about the day ahead and you just know it's going to be a great day.

Seabees are once again on my mind. 30 years ago I was serving in the Seabees as a BU3, 3rd class petty officer with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Five, aka; NMCB 5 deployed to Diego Garcia, for an 8 month stay. We worked long days and long weeks, which left little time for recreation. I was 20 years old and caught up in the jogging and running boom of that time. The recreation department on Diego Garcia had an incentive program to promote running on the island. You were to receive an embroidered patch once you ran a total of 100 miles and another for 500 miles. I set about running and logging in the miles I ran. I received the 100 and 500 mile patches and though there was no 1000 mile patch, decided I would go for the 1000 miles. I was moving very close to the 1000 number and also close to leaving the island, though the 1000 mark was surely doable for me. During my final week on the island, I just quit running. I lost interest and decided I was tired of it all. I had some great runs and memories there and I still have the runners diary that I kept back then in 1979. I finished up at something like 973 miles. Short of the 1000 mark, but having learned that it wasn't about just the number it was about the day to day effort and each experience that I had. I sometimes wish I had ran those last 27 miles or so to get to 1000, though it's no great regret. I am 50 now, and I still keep records of my runs and workouts. I look back now and then at my old runners diary from 1979 and read through what I wrote 30 years ago. I can remember some of those days vividly and can even re live some of those runs in my mind. Looking back, those were the good old days. I hope to look back at what I am doing today, perhaps 30 years from now, when I am 80 and if I do I am sure that these days will become the good old days.

Lance Wins Leadville 100
Lance Armstrong rode the 2008 Leadville 100 mountain bike race and finished 2nd. This weekend, wearing the black Mellow Johnny's jersey, he set the course record finishing 1st, 17 minutes up on last years champion and 6 time winner, Dave Weins. He later spoke to reporters about his plans to run some triathlons, 'returning to his roots' and specifically mentioned Ironman, Kona, and some half Ironmans! Next week, Lance will be riding the Tour of Ireland. The man just keeps on keepin on! Outstanding.

Today's Workout 8/14/09
This is a motto of the Seabees, our nation's dynamic military construction force. Today, many Seabees are deployed throughout Afghanistan and in many places around the world, building the structures and facilities needed to support our military forces. Regardless of your position on the war, we all owe due respect and support for our men and women who serve to protect us.
There is no such thing as a former Seabee, for once you become a Seabee you retain the title for life. I am proud to have served as a Seabee, and I acknowledge all of our military men and women who serve today in our all volunteer military forces.
Another Seabee motto is, "CAN DO" Each of us can be inspired by this if we so choose. CAN DO, means making the difference, putting forth an extra effort, setting goals and achieving success. Go the Seabee way today and do something remarkable. Be inspired by the sacrafice that others are able to make. Go to it then and think about generating a "CAN DO" attitude for yourself.

Today's Workout 8/13/09
RUN: 72 minutes, 6+ miles, easy run on the road.
This workout is a victory over myself. Tough one yesterday, going out today was a bit easier and so I managed to go for some distance. One step at a time. Beating fatigue and the lack of desire is a major mental victory. The RE CHARGING process continues. Positivity rules.

Yesterday's Workout 8/11/09
RUN: 30 minutes, 3.35 miles, treadmill.
BIKE: 23 minutes, 7 miles, stationary.
Up on this day late, sleeping in, something I rarely do. Rolled out directly into the shower, fully dressed proceeded to work. NO WORKOUT. Got through the day, pushed myself and guilted myself into getting a workout in, did so and therefore saved myself. The running streak remains intact at something over 200+ days. I feel the better for getting the workout in. I am struggling for some reason...I'll be okay though. Helping myself over the obstacles within, with positive energy. Generating this energy when the battery is low, means RE CHARGE!
