Today's Workout:
66 minutes, 6 miles, road run, new route.
Up this morning lacking much energy, following a restless night with little sleep, for whatever reason. Sipped my coffee and debated within myself whether I ought to take a day off or do some sort of exercise. I never really came to a clear conclusion. I simply opened the door at 5 am and moved outside, walking to where I normally begin to run. I sort of thought I would run a mile, maybe 2 or 3, tops. It was dark out, I didn't feel like running the usual route, I headed very slowly in a different direction. I thought that I felt better than I thought I would. The wind was blowing lightly and it was cool out this morning, the long sleeve shirt in white, so as to be seen, was the right choice. Keeping an easy pace, I lumbered along, thinking about how far I might go, at 1.5 miles I felt good enough to think about making it a 5 miler and took the turn down a road I had not run far on before this morning. I stayed on the sidewalk and managed to make it to the 2.5 mile point where turning around would make it a 5 mile run. I gained some strength on the way back and convinced myself to run for 60 minutes, then I decide to make it a 6 miler and that is what I did.
I had no reason to believe before I started this run on this dark morning, lacking any energy or motivation that I would do 3, 4, 5 or even 6 miles. Somehow I found energy and motivation and persevered and ran for 66 minutes, a slow way to get to 6 miles, a jogging pace and an easy enough effort to maintain. Some days this is how running is, you just get going and hang on and put in your miles. Some days it's your legs that carry you, on other days your mind is your strength. Today I don't know what carried me or how I carried myself as far and as long as I did, I simply did it and this is how a runner works. We are usually purposeful, planning out the time and/or distance and meeting our goals, occasionally we accomplish things mysteriously, like I did today. Carry your good habits with you wherever you go, they come in handy and sometimes when you least expect them.

Heart Healthy
I strive to exercise each day. I enjoy feeling fit and the sense of accomplishment I get from completing a run, a ride or whatever I do. The endorphins are a welcome feeling, exercise is good for us and there must be over 100 reasons why I do what I do. Let me detail in short one of the many reasons and it is a big one.
My Mom passed away last year at age 77, she lived a full and good life. Her heart gave out and fortunately she passed quickly and without complications. She had been diagnosed with colon cancer and was about to start treatment. She smoked for 60 years, had quit the last two years, but her heart gave out. She did not exercise, ate well enough and seemed to be pretty well for being 77. How long might she have lived had she implemented a minimal exercise program into her life? I wonder.
My Mom's Mother, I never knew. She passed away at age 40 of a heart attack. My Grandpa George lived to be 72, he passed away of a heart attack.
My Dad is 77. He is in pretty good shape. He picked up exercise regularly at about age 65 or so.
He has not been without problems health wise. Last year he had a quintuple bypass. He has a heart monitor implanted to regulate an inconsistent heartbeat.
It is clear that heart disease runs in my family. There is no kind of guarantee that all my exercise and healthy life choices will make any difference to my length of life. Sure I could get run over by a car and die any day. Given all the possibilities I have chosen to try to maximize my ability to keep my heart and cardio system a healthy one. It may help to keep me healthier longer in life, most likely I can live a better quality of life if not a longer one. Keeping fit just may keep me out of the hospital and that's worth working for. It just may help keep my own medical costs lower than what might be should I not work to be fit.
I don't live in fear of my family health history. I simply choose to do what I can to mitigate the potential downside and maximize the upside. Its a choice I make, its not a hard one and I enjoy the effort almost always. The results are worth the effort. And so it is what I do.

PEACE 9/11/09
PEACE
PEACE...it's something worth striving for. Internally, in one's personal life and among all people. What can each of us do to advance the cause of peace? One small step can be taken by each of us and it can further the cause. The step of which I speak is personal responsibility. We can think about how we speak and how we treat the people we come into contact with each day, at work, at play or anywhere along the way. If we treat people with kindness, regardless of how they may respond, this is the step each of us can take. If we seek to lower the volume of our voice when we are upset by something or think to calm ourselves before we demonstrate anger this is the small step we can take. There are many small steps to be found in applying yourself to becoming a more peaceful person and in so doing you will be contributing towards a more peaceful world. Perhaps on this day, 9/11/09 we might consider declaring PEACE.

BIKE: 32 minutes, 10 miles, stationary.
RUN: 55 minutes, 5 miles, industrial road run.
This morning I exercised with my new itouch, lost the nano ipod a couple of weeks back. It is nice to have some tunes to run with and so I did. Back to work today after the Labor Day Weekend and final Training Camp session at THE CABIN.
September is fully on, one week in and so I look at the remaining portion of the year as a FINAL PUSH. That is to finish the year up strong, fit and trim and feeling good.
The final push is...
Monday, September 7, 2009
September 7, 2009
BIKE: 30 minutes, 9+ miles, stationary @ Fit center.
RUN: 20 minutes, 2+ miles, treadmill, @ Fit center.
SWIM: 10 minutes, 400 yards, swimming pool.
Up most of the night last night at THE CABIN, got some kind of bug, dehydrated, sick, blah, blah, blah. In any event, up early this AM. Not feeling well to work out. Packed up and closed the cabin. 8 hours of driving from 0500 to 1300 gets us back to the Bay Area Hacienda.
Not much energy yet, but headed over to the Fit center and got it done. Something anyhow.
The word is: PERSEVERANCE.

Labor Day Weekend Training Camp Closes...
Tomorrow morning will be the final few hours of Training Camp here at The Cabin. I will get a workout in, Kim and I will proceed to close up the cabin, load out and hit the road for the drive back to the Hacienda by the Bay. It has been an outstanding camp. Relaxing both mental and physical. Have found my motivation again and am focused on healthy fuel in moderation with smart exercise. Have also begun again, the awesome habit of meditation each day, building patience and the human spirit within.
Feeling good, finding the balance to life and working to live it each day.
Patience, Persistence, & Positive Attitude= Life is Good.

Week totals 8/30-9/5/09 & Summary
BIKE 6 260 minutes 63 miles
RUN 6 354 minutes 31 miles
TOTAL 13 624 minutes 94.21 miles
Summary:
Good week, started weak, picked it up, fought back, hung in, stayed with it. Powered up and through the fatigue/lack of mojo, motivation, depression. I attribute part of this to overdose of B vitamin, which I adjusted and felt better right off. B-6 can mess with your mind. It did mine!
Good training camp session here, got the minute total back to 624, feeling good. I just may be back. Now moderating caloric intake. Today's weight: 188. Playing weight is a ways off yet!
Highlight: Paulina Lake Trail Run, only 7.5 miles but a challenge with the terrain. Be great.
September 5, 2009
Ran, jogged, slogged, crept, crawled, stumbled and walked the trail all the way around the lake.
Pretty challenging in spots, with rocky outcroppings, tree roots, narrow trail. Kim and I managed to make it all the way around in pretty good shape. I fell a couple of times, dusted up with a few scrapes, overall a good run. Will do it again perhaps next year. Great views of the lake and wilderness.

Coming back to my 'normal' self? One can only wait to see.
I spell HOPE, Honesty, Optimism, Persistence, Enthusiasm!
On the road this morning, taking a couple vacation day with the Labor Day weekend.
Kim and I are visiting THE CABIN. 8 hours on the road. Blue skies and upper 70's
here at the cabin. Later.
