Friday Footwear
Today's Workout:
X77, W25, M
BIKE: 46/15 miles, stationary. Pounded out 15 fabulous miles.
RUN: 51/5 miles, in the cold, dark streets I run. Striders feel nice.
Rewarded myself by opening up my reserve pair of running shoes the other day and have begun to wear them now and then. Although my NB Black 749's are in great condition, I couldn't help but rationalize the wearing of both pairs, just because the new one's practically begged me to put them on. New shoes to run in are fun. Why not have some fun? It's Friday, enjoy it all!

We Build, We Fight
The U.S. Navy Seabees are deployed throughout the world, to build peace and defend freedom. The Seabees were established in 1942 during World War II, as the need for professional builders who could defend themselves and the structures they built became critical. Over the years, Seabees have traveled the world during war and peace, building airstrips, buildings, bridges, housing and acting to relieve the victims in disaster areas such as, fires, earthquakes, floods, etc. Today Seabees are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other dangerous locations in the never ending effort towards peace and freedom. To all former Seabees and to those who serve today, we acknowledge your service and dedication to your mission and this great country, the United States of America.
Today's Workout:
M
BIKE: 48/16 miles, stationary.
RUN: 60/6.25 miles, treadmill.
Tough workout? Lets keep it in perspective.
What is tough, when we have our nations military forces deployed overseas and in harms way? I think its tough when I am on the run, going long and hard, but not when I think about the sacrifices being made on a daily basis by our fighting men and women of the US military. I don't think the hard efforts I make on the bike are very special, when I consider the millions of unemployed in this country who are suffering and only want to work but cannot find work. No, there is nothing much that I do that is tough relative to the struggles faced by the poor and the working class in this country and else where in the world. I am a fortunate son, a fortunate one.

New Sorority Girl

Kristi in front of her new sorority, AOII.
Spartan girl/Sorority girl.

On Saturday I went to an open house for the parents at AOII, San Jose State. Kristi is a new member of this sorority. The event was well done, giving the parents good information and I surely left with the thought and feeling that this will be a great experience for Kristi.
"A O Pie " as they call it, was founded at Columbia in 1897. The girls appear to be supportive of each other and get involved in a great many events throughout the year that benefit the community, school and the members of the sorority. I am sure proud of my daughter, I think the fact that she decided to join AOII at this time will prove to be a rewarding and intelligent decision.

2010 Tour De France

The 2010 Tour De France route has been released. There will be no team time trial. There will be some epic climbing stages in the Pyrenees. July 3 the Tour will kick off with a 5 mile individual time trail in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Le Tour will conclude in Paris on July 25th. Team Radioshack, Lance Armstrong's new American team has not yet been granted a pro license. It is assumed that this will happen routinely and the team will begin planning the season with training camps nearing closer. Alberto Contador at this early point, as the 2009 TDF champion must be considered the favorite. The season is not yet upon us, much can happen and much will happen, and so the interesting drama of this great event, Le Tour has begun.

Believe In Yourself

Believe in yourself
in the power you have
to control your own life, day by day,
Believe in the strength
that you have deep inside
and your faith will help
show you the way
Believe in tomorrow
and what it will bring
let a hopeful heart carry you through,
For things will work out
if you trust and believe
there's no limit
to what you can do.

...even when I probably shouldn't.

BIKE: 60 minutes, 19+ miles, stationary.

WALK: 10 minutes, treadmill.

RUN: 33 minutes, 3+ miles, slow and easy, treadmill.

Nursing this ankle back to health, iced it several times yesterday and soaked it in the hot tub, after swimming, iced it this morning after exercise. It is swollen, clearly a sprain, tender and I limp a bit to favor it. It is marginally better than yesterday. The test today was on the treadmill. Having wrapped it well, I walked to warm it up and slowly increased the speed as I was able to handle it, got the 3+ miles in, which surprised me, could have done more but my mistakes are in doing too much, too soon. In any event I will continue to be careful and try to get back to full strength in few more days.

October 14, 2009

Today's Workout:
X75, W, M
BIKE: 46 minutes, 15 miles, stationary.
RUN: 59 minutes, 5 miles, road run.
PM: SWIM: 15 minutes, 600 yards, pool.

Running along this morning somewhere around the 3.5 mile point, I stepped on uneven sidewalk or else my foot found a pothole that I didn't see. I turned my left ankle pretty badly. I could hear the muscle, ligaments, fibers, tendons pull, a terrible sound. I went to the ground. Immediately I told myself to be calm, the adrenaline was pumping throughout my body. I got up one one knee to make sure I could stand up before I did so. I took a few steps and limped on for a couple of minutes as the pain became acceptable and the stiffness in the ankle eased up. "Walking it off" is what we always called it in school and team sports. I was able to very slowly and carefully jog it back in, finishing up the run, without too much pain and without destroying my ankle in the process. At home, Kim helped me ice it up, I rested on the bed quietly for 15 minutes attempting to meditate. Tylenol X 2, showered and got out the door to work. We'll play it carefully today and ice it when I can. You never know what can happen unexpectedly at any given time. Patience, Persistence and Positivity really pulled me through this one.

Practice is the price of proficiency.

CARRYING GOOD HABITS
Today's Workout
X75, W, M
BIKE: 45 minutes, 15.21 miles, stationary.
RUN: 56 minutes, 5 miles, on the road.

Today's Comment
Regarding carrying your good habits. When I was a kid, age 8 to about 13 I had a chore each morning. I was up early to fetch the morning paper. Doesn't sound like a big deal, does it? Well we lived out in the countryside, in the Redwoods of La Honda, California. We lived outside of, "town." Our newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle was delivered to us at the end of an unpaved private road with a gate at it's entry point, located 1/4 mile from the house. So each morning before breakfast I had to get up and out, regardless of weather and road conditions to pickup that newspaper so my parents would have it in the morning. It so happened that I was motivated to go get it to look at the sports page, then the Sporting Green, printed out on green newsprint, I would study baseball box scores and read about whatever sports were in season. Giants, A's, 49ers, Raiders, Warriors, etc. Sometimes I would ride a bike down to pick up the paper and back, if I had a functioning bike at the time. Mostly I would run down and back, getting in some, 'training' early in the morning. Sometimes I would run hard and fast, timing my effort, I imagined myself an Olympic runner, or ran through puddles and mud. I remember well the cold days of winter, warming my hands under the hot water tap, to get the numbness out of my hands. The fall season was best tromping through all the fallen leaves, that created a carpet of orange and yellow to run on.

I sometimes wonder how I am able to get up early and run as consistently as I do. Part of the reason would have to be my surrounding environment and habits I was able to pick up as a kid. My Dad was a champion miler in High School and I know that has always effected my desire to run as a way to show my Dad that I could run too. Though I was never a miler, in the small school I went to I was always first or second in the class races of 50, 60 or 75 yard dashes. I played a lot of soccer and ran cross-country in High School one season. ( That's a whole different story!) In the US Navy Seabees I ran on my own and first began a real life of jogging 5 or so miles on most days.

I do believe those early days as a kid, running out to pick up the paper in the morning as a routine helped me to create this healthy habit for fitness and running that has stayed with me for most of the 50+ years I have been around. Carrying your good habits with you is in itself a good habit to keep.

Believe And Succeed

BELIEVE AND SUCCEED
Time passes, the days go by, weeks and months are checked off the calendar. Christmas is coming. You can't stop the hand of time. What you can do is take action in order to live your life as you determine. Whatever your circumstances and regardless of the conditions you find yourself in today, you can effect a better life for yourself. If you don't believe that, then your first step to getting somewhere from where you are is very basic. First you must try to Believe. You can begin to tell yourself that YOU CAN. You can AFFIRM the belief that you can take action to change or improve whatever it is you desire. Write it down...I BELIEVE I CAN TAKE ACTION TO SUCCEED. Say it to yourself ten times. Say it to yourself throughout the day.
You just may begin to believe it. Positive affirmations can work to change your way of thinking within your mind. You have to work at it, try it and you may surprise yourself. You will need to determine just what it is you desire to achieve, this may require some analysis, or you may instantly know what it is you desire. Define it and go after it with your best thoughts and intentions, draft a workable plan to attain your great desire. You may need to include a series of goals along the way. Think on it, work at it, plan it, be patient, be persistent, be positive. Be confident in your ability to achieve and succeed. You can if you think you can. Affirm it constantly. Obstacles can be overcome, problems can be solved, be creative and use the power you have within to begin your journey. I wish you all the positive energy and success to your rightful venture. Believe and Succeed.

Doing What You Can Do

In the movie, " The Edge" there are two men lost in the wilds of Alaska. In order to survive one realizes he must remain positive and not give up hope despite all kinds of hardship. The other man is not without heart but has other devious motivations and loses hope time and again. The man with the positive attitude, Charles, says on a number of occasions to his devious friend Bob,
"WHAT ONE MAN CAN DO, ANOTHER CAN DO" this is said as a way of raising hope back into their minds. They manage over many several difficult days to survive. At the end the less hopeful man, Bob dies. The man with the positive attitude, Charles survives, realizing he is a changed man who will now live a very different kind of life.
"What one man can do, another can do."
The take away for me on this:
Positive belief is powerful, it can empower you and lead you to accomplish great things not previously thought possible, and this can ultimately change your life.

Tenacity

TENACITY
Its a great word, tenacity. Coming from the word, tenacious. meaning; holding firm, persistent, tending to retain, holding fast. Tenacity is a good quality to have for the most part. One must strive to assure the application to positive action and not negative types of things. Clinging dearly to something or someone who is bad for you can help take you down. Stay away from your tenacious self as it relates to the negatives you encounter along life's path. Otherwise your tenacious self can be a tremendous strength. As in endurance sports, you can apply tenacity to your mental state and push yourself towards the finish. The "70.3" emblem above is a mark of tenacity if you have earned one. This is the sign for a Half Ironman Triathlon, a swim of 1.2 miles, cycling for 56 miles and running for 13.1 miles = 70.3 miles, hence the emblem. You however need not be a 70.3 type to demonstrate your own tenacity in a positive way. Odds are if you think about it you will find your tenacious self in examples within your own life. We face struggles along our way with obstacles and lessons to be learned, think about getting your tenacious self out for some exercise, the more you use it the stronger it gets!

Here is one for you. Do something different or a little bit extra today, then reward yourself! Don't be so HARD on yourself. Just do a bit of something extra and then ENJOY. Why I Blog

WHY ?
Why this Blog? Why do I do it? Because I can. I do it mainly and mostly for myself.
I like to keep a record of my training days, what I do, how many miles I run, and the minutes I spend on working out. I do it because it motivates me. I do it because I enjoy the record keeping and the opportunity to offer my opinion if even only to myself. In the off chance that some one stumbles upon this blog and finds something interesting, funny or possibly inspiring on occasion, great! Writing a few words here and there is self satisfying for me and therefore worth the effort.
I don't expect this blog to become anything more than what it is today, my own set of records and occasional opinion, that's good enough for me! Does that answer my question? Yes.
Having said all of that...another simple truth is this, I must admit...
I ASPIRE TO INSPIRE.
Yes I do. I get a great feeling of accomplishment and enjoyment if I can help someone in some way to take action and improve themselves, or inspire someone to discover something that impacts them in a positive way. I am probably an endorphin and inspiration junkie, perhaps not a bad thing to be. These are the main reasons that I blog.

THE ENDLESS SUMMER...
This is the album that really turned me on to the Beach Boys sound. I played this album over and over and over again. The harmony, the bass, the beat, the words, the stories, the feelings...wow! I've been a Beach Boys fanatic ever since. I probably bought it in 1974 or 75. I was 15 years old. Now I am 50, those songs still impress me. Living on in good sound and memories.
